Enrolment
Enrolments are usually carried out by the Principal so they can meet and welcome parents and new pupils. The office has all the documentation you will need to enrol, including zoning information and requirements.
We encourage new entrants (5 year olds) to have three pre-school visits before beginning school. Those children who are attending Springlands Kindergarten will be notified of pre-school visits by the Kindergarten. Placement of students is completed at school. The transition from pre-school is an important one and we ask parents to keep the new entrant teacher fully informed regarding your child. Pre-school meetings are held each term and parents are encouraged to attend.
Zoning
Home Zone
All students who live within the home zone are entitled to enrol at Springlands School at any time. View the home zone map 2021
Proof of residence within the home zone will be required. A tenancy agreement or district council rates demand are required.
Out of Zone Enrolments
Applications from out of zone students will be processed in the following order of priority:
- 1st priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of current students
- 2nd priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of former students
- 3rd priority will be given to applicants who are children of board employees.
- 4th priority will be given to applicants who have strong family connections to the school – eg grandparents and parents who have attended the school.
- 5th priority will be given to all other applicants
If there are more applicants in the second – sixth priority groups than there are places available selection will be by ballot conducted in accordance with the instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11g(1) of the Education act 1989. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.
Uniform
Springlands School has a compulsory school uniform. You can order the uniform from the office. Some logoed items of uniform can be purchased from the 2nd hand uniform shop. In addition white or navy socks and navy thermals can be worn. The only jewellery permitted is stud and sleeper earrings, and taonga worn inside tops. Summer shoes/sandals either blue or black are acceptable and also white, blue or black sports shoes. We do also have a range of second-hand uniform that is available at the office. During Terms 1 and 4 it is compulsory to wear a school sunhat.
Please ensure your child wears appropriate clothing to school that is named, clean and tidy.
If for any reason your child is not in uniform a uniform pass needs to be obtained from the office.
Stationery
A supply of stationery is held at the office. Purchases may be made from 8.30 am. We encourage new entrants to purchase their stationery on, or prior, to the first day of attendance. Stationery packs will be sold early in the New Year. These are sold at a highly competitive price to match specials elsewhere. Books need to be covered. Books are not allowed to be scribbled on. If this does happen parents may be asked to replace the affected books. EZ covers are available for purchase at the school office – these are a quick and easy way of covering you child’s school books. Check out all the great designs at the office.
Absences
Parents are asked to ring the school or text 027 753 6059 before 9am to report if their child will not be attending school on that particular day. If a child is absent without reason you will be sent a text or rung to safeguard your child. We highly recommend downloading the Springlands School app, free from your app store. From this app you can advise the school by text, email or phone.
If you intend to have a holiday during school time, (longer than 5 days) please advise the school in writing. While this is not a legal reason for absence we recognise the importance of family time and the richness of these experiences for our children. Teachers are not required to provide instruction for children who are absent for family occasions. Regular absences can interrupt learning and can impact on long term achievement. If children are frequently absent, a letter will be sent home. If the absences continue the truancy officer may be contacted.
Signing in/out
Parents/Caregivers taking children from the school during school hours must sign their child out using the tablet which is on the office counter. If your child has an appointment we ask you sign them out and back in when they return. Students are not to sign themselves out and must be accompanied by a Parent/Caregiver.
School App
Springlands School has their own school app that can be downloaded from your app store for any android phone. This app is used by the school to send messages to parents in emergencies, to advise of any cancellation notices for sports and other notices relevant to your child. The app also allows you to notify the school of your child’s absence by text, email or phone. Links to regularly used websites, our school newsletter, school calendar and term dates are also features of the app. We encourage all parents to download this app as it is a quick way for the school to make contact with you.
Assembly
School assemblies are held every 2nd Friday from 12.00pm-12.30pm. Parents are welcome to attend. Two classes are responsible for hosting assemblies and usually perform an item for their parents to enjoy. Assembly items are prepared and shared during this time. Parents will be notified via the School App to attend if their child is to receive an A1 Quality Certificate.
Seesaw
Seesaw is a simple way for teachers and students to record and share what’s happening in the classroom. Seesaw gives students a place to document their learning, be creative and learn how to use technology. Each student gets their own journal and will add things to it, like photos, videos, drawings, or notes. When there are new Seesaw posts, families can be notified via app notification, email or SMS. Parents are only notified about their own child’s work, and all data is safe and secure.
