Our Vision is at the heart of our curriculum
Our school vision drives our curriculum. Each term we focus on the aspect of our vision.
Springlands School Mihi
Our school Mihi was developed in 2018 following consultation with parents, students and staff. Our Mihi introduces us to our school community and acknowledges the importance we place on our vision, environment and collaborating together in our learning.
Our curriculum has four parts. Pedagogies is the teaching and learning that we believe is effective in developing 21st Century students. We value the learning partnerships including parent partnerships and engagement in a learning environment where children flourish in the digital age.
Our inquiry model allows us to integrate this teaching and learning across the curriculum.

Nga Tikanga
Springlands School recognises that students and staff have the right to a safe learning and working environment. We will work towards developing a whole school ethos promoting non-violence, respect for self and others, respect for property and environment.
We all have a responsibility to help make this happen. We value and respect everybody regardless of their behaviour.
Expectations and consequences should always be clearly defined and consistent at all times.
Positive role models and programmes encourage self discipline and positive behaviour.
We will promote a positive school culture through:
- developing behaviour codes that are known and shared by the whole school and community
- setting high expectations for standards of behaviour
- practicing proactive intervention strategies
- follow school procedures and plans for managing and modifying children’s behaviour
If we are concerned about the behaviour of your child, we will inform you immediately it becomes apparent. We encourage a strong liaison between teacher and parents when problems arise. Likewise if you have any concerns, please talk this over with the classroom teacher. Many issues are easily resolved if they are acted upon at the earliest opportunity.
At Springlands we strive to have a zero tolerance to bullying. If your child reports that he or she has been bullied we would like to know.
Learning Behaviours
We recognise the importance of learning behaviours. Following professional development and inquiring into our practice we introduced expected learning behaviours.
Everyone listens, everyone talks, everyone understands, everyone thinks and everyone learns.
This pedagogy helps us to integrate the lastest research into learning behaviours.
We use growth mindset to set goals for our learners. We want students to know how they are learning and what they are learning. Children are taking responsibility for learning- What, How, Why? – as we increase student agency in their learning.
Ka Hikitia – Managing for Success
Ko te ahurei o te tamaiti arahia
o tatou mahi
“Let the uniqueness of each child guide our work”
Ka Hikitia is about our pedagogy and our school culture/kawa
It is what we believe at Springlands that is unique to our school – our kaupapa.
It is about learning and our learning norms
It focuses our attention on culturally responsive relationships and partnerships
The themes are designed to enrich our children in the values and explore the commonalities that are shared in our school attitudes and values and those of other cultures. In doing so we connect and transfer our curriculum design into our everyday classroom thinking and learning.
We embed the latest research in our teaching practices exploring: Carol Dweck – Believing you can improve and Growth mindset, James Nottingham – The Learning Pit
The 2019 goal is Te ako ngātahi Unite together to learn
Purpose…To build a sense of equity, excellence and belonging at our place.
Equity (for all learners), excellence (A1 expectations) and belonging.
How we got here and why we are here (learning).
We are all responsible for focussing on learning behaviours through a culturally responsive lens
To tātou turanga– ‘Our place’
Our goal for this year is to develop our understanding of our School Mihi by using the phrases of this in our Ka Hikitia themes. We begin with To tātou turanga – our place, which opens up opportunities to create a class culture in which all students feel a sense of belonging and have their identity is valued.
We ask ourselves “Ko wai au?” Who are we?
In exploring the answer to this question we develop the skills and attributes of the Character and Citizenship and develop student understandings of Nga Tikanga, Nga Tikanga Ako and our Enviro-Schools Kaupapa as and when students show readiness for these learnings.
This programme is part of our school wide behaviour management programme designed to promote positive intelligent behaviours and positive relationships. Each Friday an activity is available for the children to choose. The activities include sports, cooking, art and craft activities. All parents/caregivers are invited to assist by supervising an activity. Please contact the school if you are available.
Children are able to attend Kahikitia on Friday from 1.30 – 2.30pm if they have completed work requirements and displayed appropriate behaviours during the week. Children can lose Ka Hikitia by displaying inappropriate behaviours, you will receive a letter outlining the reasons if this occurs. Children who do not earn the right to attend are required to complete the work they have not finished.

Seesaw
Seesaw is a simple way for teachers and students to record and share what’s happening in the classroom. Seesaw gives students a place to document their learning, be creative and learn how to use technology. Each student gets their own journal and will add things to it, like photos, videos, drawings, or notes. When there are new Seesaw posts, families can be notified via app notification, email or SMS. Parents are only notified about their own child’s work, and all data is safe and secure.
Mathletics
